Competitive swimmers spend a lot of time in the water and work hard to improve their pace to be competitive. They use a pace clock for swimming to improve their times. If a pace of two minutes for 100 yards is good for an average swimmer, how much faster can a competitive swimmer travel the same distance?
Swimmers compete in a 25-yard or 25-meter pool. Most practice pools are set up for this length because it gives coaches a chance to split practice groups between 20-23 lanes. It's the standard length for most summer leagues and high school pools.
A full practice can be anywhere between 3-8 miles depending on the type of practice, the time of the season, and the swimmer. An average practice is usually two hours. The swimmer will start with a warmup.
A good 1k time is 19:50. This is the average 1k time across all ages and genders.
To see the kind of health benefits that emerged in his study, however, he recommends swimming 2,000 to 4,000 yards three to five times a week. Workouts that increase yardage as time goes on will improve overall fitness and also improve health markers like muscle mass.
If you are simply looking to live a healthy lifestyle I'd say that about 1500-2000 meters or yards would be an adequate workout for most recreational swimmers. At this distance, you'll be burning around 300-500 calories while receiving all of the other benefits associated with exercise.

How long should it take to swim 300 yards?
Record your time, and use this as a base for swims of longer distances. For example, a swimmer does 100 yards comfortably in 2:00. Theoretically, this swimmer should be able to do a 200 in 4:00, a 300 in 6:00, etc. If you find you cannot maintain your pace for longer swims, try a modified pace.
